At a time when the world feels increasingly fractured by power, politics and fear, The Kingdom of Ubuntu rises as a timely artistic response. Opening at the Artscape Theatre Centre in the Opera House on 6 and 7 March 2026, this newly reimagined Afro-epic promises more than a concert — it offers a living allegory for our times.
Created, written, directed and composed by acclaimed producer and cultural storyteller Elvis Sibeko, the semi-staged production brings together the sweeping power of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, the dynamic movement of the Sibonelo Dance Project, the AfriArts Choir, and — for the first time — an indigenous orchestra led by Dizu Plaatjies, scholar, composer and Keeper of the Music.
At its heart is a profound musical dialogue: Western orchestral traditions meet ancient African sound worlds. Originally conceived as a cinematic score, the music expands through indigenous instrumentation, ritual sound and embodied rhythm — dissolving borders between eras, cultures and languages. Drawing from all of South Africa’s official languages, including San languages, and incorporating sign language, the production ensures inclusivity beyond spoken word.
Set in a mythical African kingdom, the story unfolds through ritual and movement as harmony is tested by ambition and betrayal. The central question lingers: will leadership choose domination — or Ubuntu?
Blending orchestral grandeur, indigenous music, contemporary African dance and theatrical storytelling, The Kingdom of Ubuntu – In Concert becomes a shared experience rather than passive viewing. In its final moments, the boundary between stage and audience dissolves, transforming the theatre into a collective affirmation of unity.
