From Retirement Dream to Craft Beer Destination: The Story Behind Buchanan’s Brewery

By Naushad Khan

In an era where many people spend their retirement slowing down, Tulbagh entrepreneur Rod Buchanan chose a different path. He turned a lifelong fascination with beer into a thriving craft brewery that has become one of the valley’s unique visitor experiences.

Founded in 2016, Buchanan’s Brewery began as what Buchanan describes as “a hobby with benefits.” Having spent years running a business in town, he envisioned craft brewing as a meaningful way to stay active after retirement. While he officially retired in 2019, it was only recently, after selling his business, that he was able to devote his full attention to the brewery and begin scaling up operations.

What started as a small brewing setup at home has since evolved into a dedicated brewery and tasting room, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the art and science of craft beer production. Every batch is brewed on-site using a combination of malted barley, hops, yeast and water, with the brewing process taking up to a month from start to finish.

The brewery’s appeal extends beyond the beer itself. Each label tells a story connected to Tulbagh, local personalities or Buchanan’s own journey. From the Waffen Pilsner, inspired by the town’s historic church, to specialty seasonal creations brewed for the region’s popular Christmas in Winter festival, the beers reflect a deep connection to place and community.

Operating in a niche market, Buchanan acknowledges that craft beer remains a specialised segment of the beverage industry. However, he believes visitors are increasingly seeking experiences rather than simply products. The opportunity to enjoy beer at its source, learn about the brewing process and hear the stories behind each brew has become a key part of the attraction.

Today, Buchanan’s Brewery produces between 300 and 700 litres of beer a month, depending on the season, and supplies establishments throughout Tulbagh and surrounding areas. With additional tanks on order and expansion plans underway, the brewery is entering a new chapter.

For Buchanan, the venture is proof that retirement can be the beginning of something new. What began as a personal passion has grown into a destination that contributes to Tulbagh’s tourism offering while celebrating craftsmanship, creativity and the enduring value of following one’s interests.

The story of Buchanan’s Brewery is not simply about beer. It is about reinvention, community and the rewards that can come from turning a lifelong passion into a purpose-driven enterprise.
