Cape Town audiences will have the opportunity to experience one of the world’s most acclaimed contemporary plays when the Tony and Olivier Award-winning legal drama Prima Facie receives its South African premiere at The Baxter Studio this August. Presented by How Now Brown Cow, the gripping one-woman production brings an internationally celebrated story to the local stage, inviting audiences to engage with powerful questions about justice, power and the legal system through an unforgettable theatrical experience.
Directed by acclaimed theatre-maker Neil Coppen, the production stars Danica De La Rey Jones as Tessa, a brilliant young barrister whose unwavering belief in the legal system is shattered after a traumatic personal experience forces her to confront the very institutions she once defended. Written by Suzie Miller, Prima Facie has earned global recognition for its compelling storytelling and emotional intensity. The original London production won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play, while Jodie Comer received both Olivier and Tony Awards for her acclaimed performance in the lead role. Prima Facie runs at The Baxter Studio from 4 to 29 August 2026 before transferring to the Market Theatre in Johannesburg from 17 September to 4 October. Performances have a duration of 75 minutes with no interval and carry an age restriction of no under 14 years due to strong references to sexual assault, violence and potentially triggering content.
