Cape Town theatre audiences are in for a thought-provoking and entertaining experience this August as acclaimed performer Andrew Buckland returns to the Baxter Studio with The Fool’s Guide… to Living and Dying. Running from 4 to 15 August, the award-winning production combines physical theatre, sharp comedy and contemporary storytelling to explore life in an era shaped by artificial intelligence, social media and technology. Written by Andrew and Janet Buckland and directed by Janet, the production promises a fast-paced theatrical journey that is both deeply funny and unexpectedly moving.
At the heart of the story is Milton Yonaire, played by Buckland, who embarks on a frantic mission to rescue his son from the mysterious TechBro Overlords. Along the way, audiences encounter an eccentric cast that includes a devoted fan, a vulnerable Teacup Yorkie and an enigmatic robot vacuum cleaner, creating a surreal adventure filled with unexpected twists. Buckland’s signature physical performance style, combined with clowning, satire and inventive storytelling, delivers a production that balances outrageous humour with timely reflections on humanity’s relationship with technology.
The production arrives in Cape Town with impressive credentials, having earned widespread critical acclaim and multiple accolades. It won Best Actor at the KKNK Kannas after receiving three nominations, while also receiving a coveted Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival, where Janet Buckland was recognised for her direction. The latest work continues a creative partnership spanning more than four decades, during which Andrew and Janet Buckland have become celebrated for creating original theatre that examines universal themes through humour, physical performance and social commentary.
The Fool’s Guide… to Living and Dying runs at the Baxter Studio from 4 to 15 August 2026, with evening performances at 7:30pm and Saturday matinees at 2:30pm.
