Deputy Minister of Tourism Makhotso Sotyu has called on the tourism sector to invest more actively in initiatives that connect young South Africans to employment, entrepreneurship and skills development opportunities, highlighting tourism’s potential as a driver of economic inclusion.
Speaking at the Youth in Tourism Engagement held in the Free State as part of Youth Month commemorations, Sotyu said young people possess the energy, creativity and innovation needed to help shape South Africa’s future. She emphasised that the tourism industry is uniquely positioned to support this potential by creating pathways into the economy and providing meaningful opportunities for participation.
The event, themed “Reset@50 – A Future in Tourism Calls”, brought together industry stakeholders, government representatives and aspiring tourism professionals. Activities included mentorship sessions, networking opportunities, sector presentations and a culinary showcase celebrating South African cuisine. The engagement focused on demonstrating the role tourism can play in supporting individuals, businesses and communities.
Tourism remains an important contributor to South Africa’s economy, accounting for 4.9% of GDP and sustaining 954,000 direct jobs in 2024. Sotyu noted that much of the sector’s success is rooted in domestic tourism and the growth of small businesses, which continue to create opportunities for young people entering the industry.
The engagement was hosted in partnership with the Free State provincial government, local authorities and tourism stakeholders. Looking ahead, government has reaffirmed its commitment to programmes that promote skills development, entrepreneurship support and capacity building, with the aim of ensuring more young South Africans are equipped to participate in and benefit from the country’s growing tourism economy.
