Cape Town’s vibrant cultural calendar will once again take centre stage when the Suidoosterfees returns from 29 April to 3 May 2026, bringing an impressive line-up of music, storytelling and performance to Artscape and new venues across the city. With this year’s theme, “Home,” the festival reflects both its deep roots in Cape Town and the shared sense of belonging that has defined the event for more than two decades.
Long recognised as one of the Western Cape’s most important arts festivals, Suidoosterfees continues to evolve while staying true to its mission of celebrating diverse voices and artistic traditions. In 2026 the festival expands beyond its traditional base at Artscape to include performances at the Cape Town Civic Centre, signalling both the growth of the festival and its ambition to reach broader audiences.
Music takes centre stage in this year’s programme, with performances spanning jazz, classical, cabaret and contemporary South African compositions. One of the highlights is the elegant Oorkant die pad jazz series, where audiences can enjoy evening concerts by leading musicians including Eldred Schilder, Bheki Khoza and Ramon Alexander. The series pays tribute to Cape Town’s rich jazz heritage while showcasing new collaborations and interpretations.
The festival opens with the beloved Konsert van Hoop, an uplifting musical celebration that brings together the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Cape Town Opera and emerging performers from across the region. The concert has become a powerful symbol of the festival’s commitment to nurturing young talent and celebrating the unifying power of music.
Among the headline productions, audiences can look forward to performances by well-known South African artists including Nataniël, whose new show blends storytelling with music ranging from Baroque compositions to contemporary sounds. Productions such as Stille vuur, featuring Frieda van den Heever, Coenie de Villiers and Mauritz Lotz, combine music and narrative to explore themes of resilience, reflection and artistic expression.
Popular entertainment also forms an important part of the programme. Suidooster Stormsterk brings the stars of the popular kykNET television series to the stage in a lively theatrical experience, while Suidoosterfees Boogie offers audiences a nostalgic journey through classic hits from the 1970s and 1980s.
Choral and classical music remain central to the festival’s identity. The Stellenbosch University Choir celebrates its 90th anniversary with a special gala performance, while the ATKV-Suidoosterfees Choir Competition marks its twentieth year of showcasing community choirs from across the Western Cape.
Beyond its artistic achievements, the Suidoosterfees continues to play a vital role in Cape Town’s creative economy, supporting artists, generating employment in the cultural sector and attracting visitors to the city. As the festival prepares for another dynamic edition, it once again demonstrates how music and performance can bring communities together in celebration of shared culture and creativity.
