Cape Town’s theatre scene is preparing for one of its most anticipated musical openings of the year as Pretty Woman: The Musical makes its South African debut at the Artscape Opera House on 18 March 2026. Inspired by the beloved 1990 romantic comedy that captured global audiences, the stage adaptation brings the iconic love story of Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis to life with a vibrant score, a strong local cast, and an experienced international creative team.
Originally premiering on Broadway in 2018, the musical has enjoyed successful runs in London’s West End and major touring productions across North America and Europe. Now, South African audiences will finally experience the feel-good production, with its Cape Town season running until 19 April before moving to Johannesburg’s Montecasino Teatro from 24 April.
The production features an all-South African principal cast led by Leah Mari as the spirited Vivian Ward and Christopher Jaftha as the sophisticated businessman Edward Lewis. Daniel Conradie takes on the role of Philip Stuckey. The cast arrives with strong industry recognition, with several performers recently receiving nominations at the prestigious Naledi Theatre Awards for their work in other major productions. Their achievements reflect the depth of talent currently shaping South Africa’s musical theatre landscape.
The show is produced locally by Showtime Management in association with Crossroads Live North America, continuing a successful run of major musical productions in South Africa. Recent Showtime productions such as Dear Evan Hansen and the revival of Chicago have earned critical acclaim and multiple award nominations, setting high expectations for this latest stage spectacle.
Behind the scenes, the production combines local expertise with internationally recognised creatives. Rusty Mowery, who has performed in several Broadway productions and recently directed the Australian premiere of Pretty Woman, serves as associate director and choreographer. Grammy-nominated musician Will van Dyke joins as musical supervisor, bringing experience from the Broadway production of the show.
One of the musical’s standout features is its score, written by rock legend Bryan Adams and longtime collaborator Jim Vallance. The production includes energetic ensemble numbers such as “Welcome to Hollywood” and emotionally powerful songs like “I Can’t Go Back,” blending nostalgia with modern musical theatre storytelling.
At its heart, Pretty Woman: The Musical remains a joyful and uplifting story about transformation, connection and unexpected romance. With its blend of humour, glamour and memorable music, the production promises a lively theatrical experience that celebrates both the magic of the original film and the excitement of live performance.
With strong ticket demand already reported ahead of opening night, the musical is set to be one of Cape Town’s standout entertainment highlights of the autumn season.
