Residents across Cape Town will soon have the opportunity to experience the magic of live opera — right in their own communities — as the City’s Arts and Culture Branch partners with the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble to present a series of free neighbourhood concerts.
The Opera in Your Neighbourhood programme, driven by the City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Branch within the Community Services and Health Directorate, takes world-class vocal performances beyond traditional theatre spaces and into familiar community venues. The aim is simple yet powerful: to make opera more accessible and to create memorable cultural experiences for residents of all ages.
Previous community concerts have brought immense joy and inspiration to audiences across the city. Encouraged by this positive reception, the initiative is expanding to broaden access to Cape Town’s rich cultural life.
The Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble, made up of 18 members and led by chorus master Antoinette Huyssen, will present three concerts next week. Each performance promises an engaging and dynamic programme that showcases the versatility of the ensemble.
Concert details are as follows:
- Langa Civic Centre: 26 February at 12:00
- Bothasig Community Hall: 27 February at 18:00
- Fish Hoek Community Hall: 28 February at 12:00
The repertoire is diverse, featuring opera, classical favourites, musical theatre, African traditional music and gospel. Audiences can expect an energetic showcase that highlights the power and beauty of the human voice.
Open to all ages and free of charge, these concerts offer a rare chance to see professional opera singers perform up close in a welcoming, local setting. Residents interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP to the City’s Arts and Culture Branch to secure their place.
