Visitors to Greenmarket Square can once again make use of a fully restored public ablution facility following the completion of a major refurbishment project valued at approximately R3.7 million. The upgraded facility has officially reopened, restoring an essential public amenity in one of Cape Town’s most historic and heavily visited public spaces.
The refurbishment was led by the City’s Recreation and Parks Department with support from Urban Planning and Design, Area Economic Development, the Events Department and the Cape Town Central Improvement District. The collaborative project focused on restoring the facility while respecting the heritage significance of Greenmarket Square and minimising disruption to traders, businesses and visitors.
Work included structural repairs, exterior maintenance, upgrades to drainage and lighting systems, replacement of damaged fixtures and fittings, and the introduction of enhanced security measures. The improvements were designed to increase functionality, accessibility and safety while preserving the character of the historic site.
Greenmarket Square remains one of Cape Town’s oldest public marketplaces and a significant heritage landmark. Today, it continues to serve as a vibrant economic and tourism hub, supporting informal traders and attracting thousands of residents and visitors throughout the year. The restored facility provides an important service that complements the square’s role as a gathering place and commercial centre.
The reopening forms part of ongoing efforts to maintain public infrastructure in key urban spaces across Cape Town. By investing in facilities that support tourism, local economic activity and public accessibility, the city aims to ensure that important heritage sites such as Greenmarket Square remain functional, welcoming and well maintained for future generations.
