A routine patrol in Parow has led to the arrest of a motorist found in possession of a fraudulent driver’s licence and equipment believed to be used to manufacture fake documents. The arrest forms part of a wider enforcement drive that saw 365 suspects detained by the City’s enforcement departments over the past week.
Metro Police officers stopped the ride-hailing driver on Thursday morning after noticing suspicious behaviour. Upon inspection, his driver’s licence was confirmed to be fraudulent. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a device capable of producing counterfeit licences, raising serious concerns about the potential scale of document fraud and its impact on road safety.
City officials have warned that unlicensed and unqualified drivers pose a significant threat to public safety, particularly within the public transport sector. The presence of fraudulent licences not only undermines regulatory systems but also places passengers and other road users at risk. Authorities have intensified enforcement efforts in recent weeks, targeting offences ranging from drunk driving and reckless behaviour to vehicle overloading and licensing violations.
Enforcement statistics reflect the scale of the ongoing crackdown. Metro Police made 114 arrests during the past week, including 21 for driving under the influence. Law Enforcement officers added 183 arrests and issued more than 11 000 notices. Traffic officers recorded 68 arrests, the majority linked to drunk driving, and impounded 170 public transport vehicles.
The City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre also handled over 1 200 calls for assistance during the weekend, underlining the constant demand on emergency services.
The incident serves as a reminder of the City’s firm stance on road safety and fraud prevention, reinforcing the message that compliance, competence, and accountability remain essential to keeping Cape Town’s roads safe.
