As part of National Transport Month, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate, together with Khaltsha Cycles, the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN), and the Pedal Power Association (PPA), hosted a dynamic cycling awareness event in Khayelitsha.
Under this year’s theme, “Road Safety – Share the Road Responsibly,” the initiative aimed to draw attention to the challenges faced by cyclists and to promote a culture of mutual respect among all road users.
Participants joined Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, and Provincial Minister of Mobility Isaac Sileku for a practical group ride that demonstrated the importance of visibility, awareness, and responsible cycling habits.
Event host Sindile Mavundla, Founder and Managing Director of Khaltsha Cycles, showcased sections of the route his organisation helps maintain, noting that cycling not only promotes sustainable transport but also supports public health by keeping residents active.
“Cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users,” said Quintas. “This year’s theme reminds us to respect cyclists, while encouraging them to follow safe riding practices, wear helmets, and use hand signals.”
The event brought the City’s Transport Month message to life, reinforcing that safer roads depend on shared responsibility. “Our partnerships with these organisations amplify the message of safety,” added Quintas. “Together, we ensure that road safety is not just a City initiative, but a collective commitment across communities.”
