Cape Town’s thriving events scene continues to power tourism, job creation and economic growth — but the City has raised concern over a sharp increase in late and incomplete event permit applications.
The Events Permit Office, which processes between 1 700 and 2 000 applications annually, has recorded a steady rise in delayed submissions over the past three financial years. Officials say this trend is placing significant strain on City departments, emergency services and regulatory teams, leading to longer processing times and potential delays for all applicants.
Late applications, the City has confirmed, will not be processed.
The City’s Events By-Law clearly outlines minimum submission timeframes to ensure proper planning and public safety. Organisers must submit complete applications — including all required documentation and plans — within the following deadlines:
- Small events (200–2 000 attendees): At least 15 working days
- Medium events (2 001–5 000 attendees): At least 20 working days
- Large events (5 001–10 000 attendees): At least 25 working days
- Very large events (10 001+ attendees): At least 60 working days (three to six months preferred)
Additional approvals may require longer lead times, including liquor licences (21 working days), food vendor approvals (15 working days), noise exemptions (15 working days) and land use planning approvals (60 working days).
City officials stress that these timelines are designed to safeguard attendees, minimise disruption to surrounding communities and protect public infrastructure. Proper coordination across departments is essential to managing traffic, safety, environmental impact and emergency preparedness.
