Chery climbs to fourth in South Africa’s passenger-car market

Staff Reporter

Chery has continued its strong sales momentum in South Africa, moving into fourth position in the country’s passenger-car market after recording 2,763 sales in August.

The result represents a 6.7% share of the 41,216 passenger cars sold nationally during the month and moves Chery one place higher than its July position. The August performance also highlights the brand’s steady growth through 2026, with monthly sales rising from 2,258 units in January to 2,763 in August — an increase of 22.4%.

Chery’s performance has been driven largely by the Tiggo 4 Pro, which remained the brand’s best-selling model in August with 2,297 units. The SUV accounted for more than 80% of Chery’s monthly passenger-vehicle sales. The Tiggo 7 contributed 285 units, followed by the Tiggo 8 with 137 and the Tiggo 9 with 44.

The August result builds on a strong first half of the year, during which Chery sold 14,593 vehicles, representing a 24.9% increase compared with the 11,687 units recorded during the same period in 2025. The monthly sales figures included in the manufacturer’s report show the Tiggo 4 Pro increasing consistently from 1,625 units in January to 2,297 in August.

The timing is significant as Chery prepares to expand its local offering with the arrival of the Chery Q, which will become the brand’s first fully electric vehicle in South Africa. The compact urban EV is expected to broaden Chery’s presence into the growing electric-vehicle segment.

Priced from R349,900, the 4.2-metre-long Q features a dedicated electric platform and a 2.7-metre wheelbase. Rear-wheel drive, a 70-litre front storage compartment and up to 1,450 litres of carrying capacity give the newcomer a different proposition from Chery’s predominantly SUV-focused range.

With the Q launch imminent, Chery’s fourth-place ranking provides a strong platform from which to enter the next phase of its South African growth strategy.
