Cape Town is set for a busy weekend of sporting action on 12 and 13 September, with thousands of runners taking part in the annual OUTsurance Gun Run while football fans head to Athlone Stadium for a historic Cape Town Derby.
The OUTsurance Gun Run is expected to attract around 21,000 participants across the weekend. Saturday’s programme features a 17km Trail Run, 10km Road Run, 5km Fun Run and 5km Pet Walk, while the 21.1km half marathon takes place on Sunday.
The 5km and 10km races start on Fritz Sonnenberg Road in Green Point and travel through sections of the Atlantic Seaboard before finishing at the Green Point Shared Fields. The 17km Trail Run starts at Van Riebeeck Park before taking runners across Table Mountain and Signal Hill.
With Saturday’s races starting between 06h30 and 08h30, motorists can expect traffic disruptions, particularly around Green Point, Mouille Point and Sea Point. Sunday’s half marathon will also affect routes through Green Point, De Waterkant, Sea Point, Camps Bay and Clifton.

Cape Town Derby in Athlone
Football takes centre stage on Sunday when newly promoted Hope FC host Cape Town City FC at Athlone Stadium in what will be the first derby between the two sides.
The Motsepe Foundation Championship match kicks off at 15h00, with gates opening at 13h00. Tickets are priced at R40 and are available through Webtickets.
With road races and football on the same weekend, residents and visitors can expect a lively sporting atmosphere across the city.
