Cape Town’s Traffic and Safety Officers have had an eventful week on the roads — and a recent incident involving not one, but two allegedly drunk drivers in luxury vehicles has highlighted once again the dangers of irresponsible driving.
According to the City’s enforcement services, officers responded to a collision where a supercar had ploughed into a traffic vehicle. Instead of cooperating with officials, the driver reportedly phoned a friend for help — who arrived minutes later, also under the influence. Both drivers were arrested on the spot.
This extraordinary case forms part of a broader crime-prevention operation across Cape Town. Over the past week, the City’s enforcement services — which include Traffic, Metro Police and Law Enforcement — made 291 arrests for offences ranging from drunk driving and reckless driving, to outstanding warrants and possession of narcotics.
In addition to the arrests, officers recorded nearly 57,000 fines for various traffic and by-law violations, demonstrating the scale of enforcement efforts as Cape Town moves into a busier festive season.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, expressed frustration at the ongoing disregard for road safety laws.
“It’s astonishing how many people still believe they can drink and drive — and even more shocking when someone calls a second drunk driver to assist. This type of behaviour puts innocent lives at risk.”
Cape Town typically experiences an increase in alcohol-related incidents from November through January, with enforcement doubled on key transport routes, entertainment hotspots and nightlife districts.
The City has appealed to residents and visitors to plan ahead — use e-hailing services, public transport, or assign a sober driver when socialising.
