The Overberg has a way of slowing time, and our three-day road trip from Cape Town was a reminder of just how much variety this region packs into a relatively short drive. Leaving early and heading east on the N2, our first stop was the iconic Peregrine Farm Stall. The smell of fresh baking is impossible to ignore. Their spinach and feta quiche remains a reliable favourite, but it’s the venison pie — rich, hearty and deeply satisfying — that continues to be their bestseller for good reason.
Back on the road, we arrived at Caledon Spa for a few indulgent hours in the hot springs. As part of a Tsogo Sun resort, the property offers a hotel, casino and spa facilities, but it’s the warm, mineral-rich pools that make this a standout stop and a perfect reset before continuing the journey.
Hermanus was next, with a quick stop at the local Food Lovers Market that turned into a highlight all on its own. With an impressive range of fresh produce, ready-to-eat meals and generous portions, it easily ranks among the best Food Lovers stores in the country. The made-to-order fish and chips are exceptional value and proof that simple food, done well, always wins.
Our overnight stay was at Oude Schuur Guesthouse in Vermont — a beautiful property offering country-style luxury and genuinely warm hospitality. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel at home from the moment you arrive and well worth considering if you’re staying in the area.
The next morning began at the Hermanus Gift Market at Curro School, where we were genuinely wowed by the scale and variety on offer. From toys and sweet treats to clothing and décor, it’s a must-visit before it closes on 28 December 2025.
From there, we headed inland to Swellendam, South Africa’s third-oldest town and roughly 220km from Cape Town. Rich in history, the town rewards curious visitors with meaningful sites, including the Dutch Reformed Church, the location of the town’s oldest mosque, and the Muslim slave grave site. A berry tasting at Wildebraam and a cheese stop just outside town added delicious layers to the experience.
Swellendam is also surrounded by three nearby nature reserves, making it a great base for outdoor adventures. Lunch at Tredici was a standout — fresh, flavourful food served in a space that doubles as a foodie’s playground, complete with rare imported ingredients and quality kitchenware that are often hard to find in bigger cities.
That night, we stayed at the Swellendam Guesthouse in town. The accommodation was comfortable, spacious and excellent value for money. Our room included a minibar, microwave and a private patio — practical touches that make a short stay that much easier.
The following morning started in true South African style with breakfast at Wimpy, before we set off for Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. About 100km off the N2, the drive is straight, easy and absolutely worth it. Visiting the national park at Agulhas is a humbling experience — standing at the meeting point of two oceans is something every South African should do at least once.
From Agulhas, we enjoyed a scenic return via Bredasdorp, Napier and Caledon before joining the coastal route toward Kleinmond. This stretch of road feels like driving along the very edge of Africa and should never be rushed. A stop at the Kleinmond harbour is essential. We enjoyed a mini seafood platter at Vannie Hook, a popular local spot known for traditional, no-frills seafood done exceptionally well. Seating is set up in small boats overlooking the ocean, making the experience as memorable as the food — fresh, simple and straight from the sea.
The coastal drive that follows is one of the Western Cape’s most beautiful, offering multiple viewpoints perfect for photographs. Passing through Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Gordon’s Bay, the route delivers uninterrupted ocean views and a sense of calm that stays with you long after the trip ends.
Eventually, it’s back onto the N2 and home to Cape Town — with a camera full of memories and a renewed appreciation for just how special the Overberg really is.
