A Festive Guide to Baroque: What to Expect at Enchanted Baroque

Cape Town’s festive season gets an elegant lift this December as Enchanted Baroque returns to St George’s Cathedral on 19 December, offering audiences a rich immersion into one of classical music’s most expressive eras. Presented by the KT Wong Foundation, Gavin Rajah, and Opera UCT, the concert showcases the university’s rising vocal stars alongside a specialist Baroque ensemble under the direction of Professor Jeremy Silver.

The one-hour programme features a curated mix of arias, duets and ensemble pieces from Handel’s operas and oratorios, complemented by works from Tallis and Rameau. Expect the serene glow of “As steals the morn upon the night”, the virtuosic sparkle of “Voglio tempo”, and the rousing pulse of “Why do the Nations”. In the soaring acoustics of St George’s Cathedral—arguably one of Cape Town’s most atmospheric performance spaces—the music promises to bloom with warmth, clarity and resonance.

A Gentle Guide for Listeners

Baroque music is celebrated for its clarity, ornamentation, rhythmic vitality and emotional directness. In a setting designed for natural reverberation, audiences will hear every decorative flourish, every dialogue between voice and instrument, and the crystalline textures that define this period. Whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned listener, the programme offers an accessible and uplifting entry into a musical world shaped by Handel, Purcell and Vivaldi.

A Reception to Savour

This year’s concert includes an optional post-performance reception in The Labyrinth at St George’s Cathedral. Supported by Klein Constantia, guests will enjoy a curated selection of the estate’s iconic wines—an elegant extension of the evening that blends music, heritage and festive celebration.

A New December Tradition

With exceptional young performers, a dedicated Baroque ensemble, and the cathedral’s breathtaking acoustics, Enchanted Baroque is poised to become one of Cape Town’s most beloved year-end cultural traditions—a moment of calm, beauty and community before the festive rush.
