Japanese culture takes centre stage again as the 12th Annual Japan Day returns to Stellenbosch on Saturday, 25 October 2025, from 10 AM to 2 PM at Die Stal, Stellenbosch University. Co-hosted by the Office of the Consul of Japan in Cape Town and the Stellenbosch University Japan Centre, the event promises a colourful and interactive celebration of Japanese traditions, creativity, and cultural exchange.
Drawing more than 3,000 visitors last year, Japan Day remains a free, family-friendly event designed to immerse the public in the richness of Japanese culture — from ancient arts to contemporary trends.
Visitors can look forward to an array of live performances, including martial arts demonstrations, koto (Japanese harp) recitals, and a lively cosplay competition and parade. A highlight of the day will be the hands-on workshops where attendees can try their hand at mokuhanga (woodblock printing), sumi-e (ink wash painting), origami, tea tasting, and shodo (calligraphy).
Cultural enthusiasts will also enjoy bonsai and ikebana displays, a poster exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the chance to learn about Japan’s JET Programme and the Stellenbosch University Japan Centre’s initiatives.
Adding a shopping twist, the Japan Day Marketplace will offer everything from manga and pop culture items to Japanese teas and fine imports.
