National Transport Month kicked off in Cape Town with a vibrant scholar-focused road safety activation in Mitchells Plain on Wednesday, 1 October 2025. The event, hosted by the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate in partnership with the Safety and Security Directorate and the Pedal Power Association (PPA), highlighted the importance of pedestrian and cycling safety under this year’s theme, “Road Safety – Share the Road Responsibly.”
Learners from Rocklands and Wavecrest Primary Schools were the first to experience the City’s interactive safety programme at the Traffic Learner Centre, which was launched in 2024. The Centre offers a realistic road environment where children can learn practical safety skills such as how to cross busy streets, wear helmets correctly, and remain visible when cycling.
Councillor Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, said the City is prioritising young pedestrians and cyclists. “Children are among the most vulnerable road users. Starting Transport Month with scholar safety sends a clear message that protecting our youngest citizens is a priority,” he explained.
The event had extra energy thanks to Heart FM’s Aden Thomas Breakfast Show, which broadcast live from the site, giving learners the opportunity to share their thoughts on air. Executive Director for Urban Mobility, Regan Melody, noted that the hands-on learning model has a lasting impact. “Learners take these lessons home, helping spread road safety awareness beyond Transport Month,” he said.
Throughout October, the City will continue to engage communities with targeted campaigns encouraging all road users to share the road responsibly.
