The Dragons finally ended their 18-match losing run in the United Rugby Championship with a hard-fought 17–17 draw against the Sharks at Rodney Parade in Newport. While the Welsh side will be relieved to stop the rot, they may also feel they let a golden opportunity for victory slip away.
In wet conditions, the Sharks took an early lead through Marvin Orie’s close-range try, converted by Jean Smith. The Dragons responded with an impressive burst from Tonga centre Fetuli Paea, setting up Aaron Wainwright for a powerful finish. Smith’s penalty nudged the Sharks ahead again, but Paea’s midfield brilliance then created another opening for Angus O’Brien to score, giving the Dragons a 14–10 lead.
However, the South Africans struck back before half-time, using their maul effectively to send captain Vincent Tshituka over, with Smith adding the extras for a 17–14 lead at the break.
The second half became a gritty arm-wrestle dominated by scrums and slippery handling. Tinus de Beer levelled the scores with a penalty, but the Dragons turned down a late drop-goal attempt that could have sealed their first home win since the opening weekend of last season. Paea’s debut ended prematurely with a wrist injury, adding to the team’s frustrations.
Despite a yellow card for replacement prop Chris Coleman, the Dragons held firm under intense Sharks pressure in the dying minutes. The draw ends a long losing streak but leaves the side still searching for their first victory of the season.
With upcoming fixtures against Glasgow, Cardiff, and Ospreys, Filo Tiatia’s men will hope this gritty performance can spark a turnaround in fortunes.
