Creativity takes centre stage at the Atlantic Beach Hotel in Melkbosstrand over the coming weeks as Creative SA presents a diverse programme of practical workshops designed for beginners, hobbyists and experienced makers alike. From traditional Japanese stitching techniques to paper art, macramé and crochet, the series offers participants the opportunity to learn new skills while creating handmade projects to take home.
The programme begins with the Crochet Flower Workshop on Wednesday, 24 June, from 10:00 to 13:00. Priced at R250 per person, the workshop introduces participants to the art of crocheting decorative flowers that can be used to embellish garments, accessories and home décor.
On Friday, 26 June, also from 10:00 to 13:00, the Paper Flowers Workshop invites guests to create realistic decorative blooms from paper. The three-hour workshop costs R250 per person and is ideal for anyone interested in paper crafts, event décor or handmade gifts.
Saturday, 27 June, features two specialist workshops. The morning session, from 09:00 to 12:00, is the Sashiko Stitching Workshop. Costing R750 per person, the fee includes a take-home kit. Participants will learn the traditional Japanese embroidery technique known for its beautiful geometric patterns and decorative hand stitching.
Later that afternoon, from 13:00 to 17:00, the Kinusaiga Workshop introduces the Japanese art of stitchless quilting, also known as fabric mosaic. Priced at R750 per person, the workshop teaches participants how to create striking textile artwork without the use of a needle or thread.
The weekend concludes on Sunday, 28 June, with the Boro Visible Mending Workshop from 14:00 to 17:00. Costing R450 per person, the workshop explores the sustainable Japanese practice of repairing and enhancing garments through decorative stitching, transforming worn fabrics into unique pieces with character and history.
The creative programme continues into July with the Beaded Glasses Strap Workshop on Wednesday, 1 July, from 10:00 to 13:00. At R250 per person, attendees will design and make colourful beaded eyewear straps that combine practicality with personal style.
On Thursday, 2 July, the Paper King Protea Workshop offers another opportunity to master paper artistry by creating South Africa’s iconic national flower. Running from 10:00 to 13:00, the workshop is priced at R250 per person.
The series concludes on Wednesday, 8 July, with the Macramé Keyring Workshop, taking place from 10:00 to 13:00. Participants will learn fundamental macramé knotting techniques while crafting a stylish leaf-shaped keyring. The workshop costs R250 per person.
