Cape Town audiences will have the opportunity to experience one of South Africa’s most thought-provoking contemporary theatre productions when Commission Continua arrives at the Baxter Masambe Theatre for a limited season this June. Created by acclaimed theatre-makers Tony Bonani Miyambo and Phala Ookeditse Phala, the production examines the enduring impact of South Africa’s commissions of inquiry and asks difficult questions about truth, justice and accountability in a democratic society.
At the centre of the story is Bright Maluleke, a records clerk responsible for processing the findings of numerous commissions of inquiry. As he works through endless reports, affidavits and official documents, the emotional weight of the stories contained within them begins to surface. Performed in an intimate setting using a photocopier, microphone and live loop station, the production transforms bureaucratic processes into a compelling theatrical experience that blends performance, sound and social commentary.
The production has already earned international acclaim through performances in London, Los Angeles, Germany and Singapore. Its themes resonate far beyond South Africa’s borders, exploring how institutions document injustice while communities continue to grapple with its consequences. Through its innovative staging and emotionally charged storytelling, Commission Continua challenges audiences to reflect on the relationship between recorded truth and meaningful change.
Commission Continua runs at the Baxter Masambe Theatre from 2 to 13 June 2026, with evening performances at 8pm and Saturday matinees at 3pm.
