Cape Town’s young learners were given a closer look at careers in science, technology and innovation when City Libraries partnered with Amazon to host a STEAM-focused exhibition at the company’s headquarters in Observatory.
The event brought together 70 learners and 12 exhibitors representing different STEAM fields, including science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Learners had the opportunity to explore career and study options while taking part in demonstrations and interactive activities covering robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, flash art and other technology-focused areas.
It is the second consecutive year that City Libraries and Amazon have partnered to promote interest in STEAM and expose young people to opportunities in industries that are increasingly shaping the future of work.
With most of the participating learners being female, the event also formed part of the City’s Women’s Month activities and placed a particular emphasis on encouraging young women to consider careers in STEAM.
Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, said greater participation by women could contribute to more diverse research, innovation and problem-solving across the sector.
The event also recognised young readers, with 16-year-old Junior Saule from Mfuleni Library receiving the Teen Library Ambassador Challenge award. Saule won the social media competition after creating a short video explaining why he enjoys reading and values his local library.
The exhibition concluded with a group STEAM quiz before learners visited the various exhibitor stations to experience the opportunities on offer.
The initiative forms part of the City Libraries’ wider Science Month programme, with individual libraries across Cape Town hosting science shows, experiments, career talks and activities linked to STEAM and makerspaces throughout the month.
