The City of Cape Town is inviting residents, historians and visitors to share photographs, memories and historical information about Miller’s Point as part of efforts to shape a long-term vision for the coastal conservancy near Simon’s Town.
Located along the False Bay coastline a few kilometres south of Simon’s Town, Miller’s Point forms a narrow coastal strip between the Table Mountain National Park World Heritage Site and the Table Mountain Marine Protected Area. The site is also regarded as a gateway to the Great African Seaforest and contains shell middens that provide valuable insight into the region’s indigenous history.
The City’s Coastal Management branch is currently developing a long-term plan for the area, which includes a popular tidal pool, campsite, beach and public boat launch facilities. The intention is to implement improvements over time that will revitalise the area while protecting its ecological and heritage value.
Among the priorities identified are the repair of deteriorating infrastructure, including outdated amenities, eroded pathways and inadequate visitor facilities. The City also plans to restore several historic buildings at the site, many of which are located near the well-known Black Marlin restaurant.
City officials are now gathering as much information as possible about the landscape, heritage and historic buildings that have helped shape the identity of Miller’s Point over many decades. Residents who may have old photographs or knowledge about what the buildings originally looked like, or how they were used in the past, are encouraged to share this information with the project team.
Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment Alderman Eddie Andrews said the City hopes to restore the structures as closely as possible to their original form while ensuring that any upgrades respect the area’s heritage.
