Cape Town is preparing for another busy beach weekend, and the City of Cape Town is urging residents and visitors to stay within designated Safe Zones at beaches and public amenities.
Since 1 December, 19 non-fatal drownings and four fatal drownings have been recorded. Lifeguards have also responded to 33 water rescues, 39 first-aid incidents, and several cases of anti-social behaviour. On a single busy day at Clovelly Beach, four non-fatal drownings were reported during two separate incidents.
To reduce risk, the City reminds beachgoers of the four golden rules of water safety:
- Swim only between the red and yellow flags
- Do not swim under the influence of alcohol
- Be alert to rip currents
- Supervise children at all times near water
The Identikidz child safety programme continues to play a vital role, with 55,075 children registered to date and 78 reunited with caregivers. Strand, Muizenberg and Strandfontein have seen the highest registrations.
“We expect another bumper weekend as Cape Town rings in the new year,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham. “Please remind your family of the golden rules and make use of Identikidz where available.”
