The 2026 Suidoosterfees NATi Theatre Festival returns from 29 April to 3 May with a compelling and diverse programme that affirms Cape Town’s status as a thriving hub of theatrical innovation. Under the theme Home (Tuiste), the festival consistently proves why it is held in high regard within South Africa’s cultural landscape — nurturing bold new voices while celebrating seasoned artists who continue to shape the nation’s arts.
This year’s flagship production, Eugene, adapts Kirby van der Merwe’s multi-award-winning novel into a richly poetic stage experience. Directed by Nico Scheepers and featuring Carlo Daniels in the title role, the work explores themes of marginalised masculinity, mental health and forgiveness. South African satire legend Pieter-Dirk Uys brings both wit and wisdom in Evita @ 90 and The Echo of a Noise, blending humour with thoughtful reflection on history and contemporary life. These performances remind audiences why sharp satire remains vital to cultural discourse.
Supporting emerging voices, productions such as Joshlin: Meer as ’n naam and Lemoene, lemoene… pose urgent questions about justice, language and human connection, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to fresh and meaningful perspectives.
